Classic Hearty Chili Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • 1 large onion, diced

  • 1 green bell pepper, diced

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 lb. ground beef or ground turkey

  • 2 (14.5 oz) cans diced tomatoes

  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce

  • 1 (15 oz) can kidney beans, drained and rinsed

  • 1 (15 oz) can black beans, drained and rinsed

  • 2 tablespoons chili powder

  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin

  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika

  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for spice)

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • 1 cup beef or chicken broth (optional, for thinner consistency)

  • Toppings (optional): shredded cheese, sour cream, chopped green onions, jalapeños, or tortilla chips

Instructions:

  1. Sauté Vegetables Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add diced onion and bell pepper. Cook until softened (about 5 minutes). Stir in garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds until fragrant.

  2. Brown the Meat Add ground beef or turkey to the pot. Cook, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, until browned and fully cooked. Drain any excess fat if necessary.

  3. Combine Ingredients Stir in diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, kidney beans, black beans, chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and pepper. Add broth if you prefer a thinner chili.

  4. Simmer Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and let it simmer for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. The longer it simmers, the deeper the flavors will develop.

  5. Adjust Seasoning Taste and adjust the seasoning with additional salt, pepper, or spices as needed.

  6. Serve and GarnishLadle the chili into bowls and top with your favorite garnishes such as shredded cheese, sour cream, green onions, or tortilla chips.

Enjoy!

This chili is perfect for a cozy night or a potluck. It also pairs wonderfully with cornbread! Let me know if you'd like a cornbread recipe too.
